Mary Lou Bendrick
Strategy & Operations
In 2024, I cofounded Avocet Books along with my husband and partner of thirty-plus years, Hal Clifford.
I have worked as a newspaper reporter, columnist and copy editor, and I am the the author of Eat Where You Live and a contributor to the anthologies Living in the Runaway West and Good Dog. My fiction has appeared in small press journals. I also worked in non-profit development and as a voice-over actor.
Now I’m behind the scenes at Avocet, working on strategy, marketing, business development, hiring, and anything else that our small business needs. When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my nose in a book or outside in the Carolina Low Country with a pair of binoculars in my hands and a bird identification app open on my phone. I’m a practicing Buddhist (Plum Village tradition), a hospice volunteer, and a mild threat at the mahjong table. I’m happiest when sharing a meal or game night with Hal and our kids, including our late-life (and under the table) fur baby.
